Meet Karina

Karina Davis

Hi, I'm the founder of SewCal Sewing. My sewing experience began 30 years ago when I taught myself to sew my first quilt. Choosing the fabric colors and quilt pattern was challenging but fun. I'll never forget the joy and feeling of accomplishment when finishing my quilt. So much so that I went on to make 7 lap sized quilts in 4 months! Each one applied a different technique and style. In the 30 years since, I went on to making more quilts, home accessories, messenger and tote bags, purses, and clothing for all ages.

What I discovered from all my experience is that my true passion is sharing my love of sewing. Having taught teens and adults, I've realized there's nothing more satisfying than seeing my students successfully create their hand made items and incorporate sewing into their lives. If you're looking for a creative outlet, a hobby that enhances your life, or you'd like to build on skills you already have, I would love to help you on your adventure!

Why Learn to Sew?

illustration of sewing
Sewing is more economical
After the initial investment, sewing is more economical than buying ready to wear clothing, home decor and accessories. Sewing saves you money with expensive alterations that you can do at home. You can also save by making gifts such as bags, baby items, etc.
Sewing is good for the planet
Sewing your own clothes reduces the use of fast fashion and helps with waste by using earth friendly and deadstock fabrics.
Sewing is a perfect creative outlet
Create your own unique pieces in fashion, decor, or art. You can sew practically anything and your options on fabrics, materials, and accoutrements are endless!
Sewing is a practical skill
Learn to mend your pants, alter the size/fit of your clothes, or upcycle your existing wardrobe to get more life out of it.
Sewing is therapeutic
Sewing is meditative and calming, and has been shown to help with anxiety and stress. It also boosts self-esteem.
Sewing helps you develop new skills
Develop your hand/eye coordination, master construction techniques and learn to problem solve.
Sewing is a money maker
Sell the items you create at craft fairs or online. Scrunchies, non-paper towels, dog collars, and bowl koozies are big money makers.
Sewing builds community
The sewing world is a large one with in person or online communities that love to share their talents and knowledge.
